El Futuro de los Derechos LGTBIQ+ y de las Mujeres en Extremadura en la Mesa de Negociación

After the electoral victory of María Guardiola (PP) in Extremadura, the inevitable has happened: the Partido Popular has resumed contact with Vox to try to form a government. However, this path is uphill, since the far-right party is not willing to give in on its 200 measures, the same ones that, in the past, prevented a budget agreement and forced a repeat election.

Reader, it is crucial to understand that these measures are, for many, true red lines in social matters. At their core, these demands seek to reverse significant advances, directly affecting the rights of women and the LGTBIQ+ community.

The rights of the LGTBIQ+ community in the spotlight

One of the most controversial demands that Vox has put back on the table is the repeal of the LGTBI Law of Extremadura, a law approved in 2015 with a broad consensus, which included the support of the PSOE, the PP and other groups. This legislation is fundamental, since it articulates public and social equality policies to fight discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

For the LGTBIQ+ community, the defense of this law is not only a political issue, but a guarantee of dignity and protection. In this context, to what extent is the Popular Party willing to give in to principles that Guardiola herself firmly defended?
Key demands of Vox in social matters:

  • Repeal of the LGTBI law.
  • Suppression of subsidies for what they call “gender ideology.”
  • Elimination of the Women’s Institute of Extremadura.

The defense of dignity: between politics and commitment

We remember the words of the popular leader in May, when she sent a clear message to those who opposed the rights of the group: “The rights of LGTBI people are not the heritage of any ideology and dignity has no political colors”. This declaration, firm at the time, contrasts with the reality of current negotiations.

Guardiola has reproached Vox for not having made its position more flexible, reiterating that the negotiations in Extremadura should be “autonomous” from the dynamics of state politics. But Vox’s insistence on its package of 200 measures, which also includes the suppression of organizations such as the Women’s Institute, created in 2001, shows that the ideological conflict continues to be the central axis.

What does this negotiation leave us?

The citizens of Extremadura are watching carefully. Vox’s demands put at risk laws and institutions designed to protect the people most vulnerable to discrimination. This is a pulse that goes beyond parliamentary arithmetic and that touches the fiber of human rights and social equality.

Reader, the question that remains in the air is: if we give in to the repeal of a social law that protects the dignity of a group, what message is sent about the value of fundamental rights in the political game? And, above all, what is the limit of negotiation when the principles and rights of people are in the balance? It is a moment for deep reflection on the future of equality policies in our territory.
