In an increasingly connected world, digital privacy has become a central concern. For the Rainbow reader, aware that certain conversations require special discretion, whether for reasons of security, privacy or simply to delimit personal boundaries, the WhatsApp Chat Restriction function is presented as a fundamental tool. This functionality is not a simple filing cabinet; It is a real “wall” of privacy that Meta has incorporated so that you feel that you have absolute control over your most sensitive messages.

What is Chat Restriction and How Does It Work?

The Chat Restriction feature (sometimes called “Chat Block” depending on the language) offers a higher layer of security for specific conversations, both one-on-one and group. Its purpose is to protect your most personal conversations using a password or biometric authentication, ensuring they stay safe even if someone accesses your phone.

  • Hide and Relocation: The selected chat disappears from the main conversations list and is moved to a dedicated folder called “Restricted Chats”.
  • Double Layer of Security: To access this hidden folder, the application requires device authentication (fingerprint, Face ID or the phone’s unlock code).
  • Silent Notifications: Discretion is total. Notifications from restricted chats do not show the content of the message or the name of the contact, limiting themselves to a generic “WhatsApp: 1 new message”.
  • Synchronization: It is important to note that this protection applies only to the device where it is activated. If you use your account on multiple computers, you must configure it individually on each one.

Secret Code: The Higher Level of Concealment

While biometric authentication protects chats from casual glances, WhatsApp has gone a step further by allowing you to completely hide the “Restricted Chats” folder.

This option is activated by creating a Secret Code (different from the phone’s access code). Once hidden, the folder disappears from the main screen and can only be revealed by entering said secret code in the WhatsApp search bar. This is an especially valuable measure for users who share their device or who, due to personal circumstances—something that the LGTBIQ+ community has often had to consider for security and visibility reasons—need the maximum level of invisibility in their communications.

Key Difference with Archive: It is essential not to confuse the Restriction with the Archive function.

Archiving simply moves the chat from the main view, but it is still accessible with a single tap and you continue to receive normal notifications. Restricting, on the other hand, hides it completely, requires verification and silences the warnings.

The incorporation of this tool highlights a clear trend: technology responds to the growing demand for safer environments for our digital lives. For many, especially readers of our magazine, WhatsApp chats are an intimate space where affections are woven, sensitive information is shared and topics that have no place in other areas are discussed.

Given the possibility of our device falling into the wrong hands or being searched, is this feature a sufficient solution, or is it a reminder that ultimate online security is a pipe dream? What other steps should we take to guarantee the freedom of expression and privacy we deserve? In the end, technology offers us the tools, but surveillance and the decision to protect our most vulnerable spaces remains a personal and non-transferable task.

Restricted chats: greater privacy on WhatsApp

WhatsApp allows you to protect specific conversations by adding an extra layer of security. When you restrict a chat, it disappears from the main list and is saved in a special folder called Restricted Chats.

To access these conversations, you’ll first need to unlock them using a device security method, such as your phone’s PIN, Face ID, fingerprint, or a secret code of your choice. While a chat is restricted, no contact information or message content will be displayed in notifications; You will only see a generic notice of the type “WhatsApp: 1 new message”.

Important: Depending on the language configured in WhatsApp, this function may be called Restrict chat or Block chat.

How to activate or deactivate a restricted chat

You can apply this option to any conversation, whether individual, group, or even muted chats. If you don’t have device authentication set up, WhatsApp will ask you to do so before continuing.

Steps:

  1. Long press the chat you want to protect or release.

  2. Tap the More options icon.

  3. Select Restrict chat or Stop restricting chat.

Please note:

  • On Android, media files from restricted chats can be saved, but automatic visibility cannot be enabled.

  • Calls from contacts with restricted chats will continue to come in as normal.

  • If you restore a backup to a new phone, protected chats will still be restricted and you will need to have authentication enabled to access them.

Set up an additional secret code

In addition to locking your phone, you can create a exclusive secret code for your restricted chats.

How to do it:

  1. Enter Restricted Chats.

  2. Tap More options > Restricted chat settings > Secret code.

  3. Enter the code and press Next.

  4. Repeat to confirm and tap OK.

To remove the secret code:

  • Go to Restricted Chats > More Options > Restricted Chat Settings > Secret code > Deactivate > Continue.

Access the restricted chats folder

By default, the folder appears at the end of the chat list. Just scroll down and tap Restricted Chats.

You can also hide it completely:

  • Enter Restricted Chats > Settings and activate Hide Restricted Chats.

To access when hidden:

  1. Go to the Chats tab.

  2. Type your secret code in the search bar.

  3. Tap Restricted Chats.

  4. Confirm your identity with the fingerprint or the configured method.

  5. Open the chat you want to consult or respond to.

Remove restriction and delete all protected chats

If you have hidden the folder and forgotten the secret code, there is the option to unrestrict and delete all protected chats.

By doing so:

  • Chats will return to the normal list.

  • All message history and media files will be deleted.

  • The secret code will be completely erased.

Steps to empty chats:

  1. Open Settings in WhatsApp.

  2. Enter Privacy > Restrict chat.

  3. Select Stop restricting and empty restricted chats.

Note: If you want to recover deleted messages, it will only be possible to restore them from the most recent backup made before emptying the chats.
