Talking about LGTBIQ+ rights at an international level is, on many occasions, peering into an abyss of inequalities and violence. However, among the reactionary discourses that try to break through, initiatives arise willing to recognize those who risk their lives for our freedom. Dear reader, today at Rainbow we bring good news: the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and ILGA World have officially announced the International Pride Awards 2026.

This second edition seeks to put a face and name to leaders, activists and allies who, from any corner of the planet, build a future where diversity is not a reason for persecution. The final touch will be on next August 5, when the winners will be announced during the unique setting of WorldPride in Amsterdam.

The harsh reality behind the awards

To understand the magnitude and urgency of these recognitions, originally born in 2024, we must look at the global figures with journalistic rigor. Equality is far from being a universal norm. Today, the map of our rights is still full of dark areas:

Publicidad

  • 65 States maintain laws that criminally punish consensual relations between people of the same sex.
  • In 7 countries, loving who you love can cost you the death penalty.
  • Only 12 nations protect sexual orientation in their constitutional texts, and only 5 do the same with gender identity.

Only one country in the world explicitly protects gender expression, and the recognition of sexual characteristics remains a pending issue globally.

Faced with this x-ray of exclusion, the awards stand as a message of resistance. As Julia Ehrt, executive director of ILGA World, has expressed, in a context where the most conservative forces seek to divide us for political interest, it is vital to remember that an egalitarian world makes us all happier.

Categories, dates and a vital impulse for activism

The process to nominate your references will open very soon. Take note: from March 17 to April 17, 2026, anyone can send their nominations through the official website. An exceptional jury, made up of prominent human rights figures, will choose those who stand out in these five areas:

  • Building the movement in the face of hostility.
  • Celebrating diverse lives.
  • Emerging leader.
  • A life dedicated to equality.
  • Extraordinary alliance.

In addition to the enormous symbolic and political weight, the organization has taken a fundamental step towards material equity. Those winners who reside in low- and middle-income countries will receive a financial award of $10,000. This fund is not a simple gift, but a vital tool to ensure that they can continue their activist work with greater resources and security.

A space for reflection

The United Nations, through voices like that of Mandeep Dhaliwal (UNDP program director), reminds us that marginalizing the LGTBIQ+ community slows down the development of the entire society. And here I ask you the question, reader: Is international recognition enough to protect activists who operate in hostile territories? How can we, from our privileges or local freedoms, materially and emotionally support those who face prison or death sentences for defending our flag? Awards make people visible, but real solidarity requires daily commitment. Let no one be left behind.
