The political commitment of the LGTBI+ community is not coincidental, it is a direct response to risk. This is evidenced by the LGTBI+ State report 2025, presented by the LGTBI+ State Federation and prepared with data from the 40dB agency, which shows how the group goes to the polls with determination when they perceive threats to their rights.
According to the study, 81% of LGTBI+ people voted in the last European elections, compared to a 47% participation rate in the general population. The gap is clear. And significant.
“These data show that the LGTBI+ group is one of the population groups most aware of the need to see their rights recognized and defend them and that it could have been the retaining wall against the ultra movements in the last elections,” explained María Rodríguez, head of Research, Training and Quality of the Federation.
Voting as a defense tool
The results of the LGTBI+ State report 2025 confirm a trend that goes beyond ideological sympathy: the majority of the group votes with a clear intention to support those who protect their rights.
-
57.4% of the group votes for progressive parties, compared to 40% of the general population.
-
Between 2023 and 2025, ideological identification with the left grew from 38% to 45%.
-
Almost 10% of LGTBI+ PP voters in 2023 would change their vote today towards progressive options.
“According to research, LGTBI+ people, the vast majority, are willing to vote decisively and consciously, especially when their equality is at stake,” Rodríguez stressed.

Support is not automatic: it requires results
The LGTBI+ State Federation insists that this political support has a price: the real fulfillment of the commitments made by those who ask for their vote.
“In recent years, attacks on our realities have intensified, physical and verbal attacks have increased and ultra-conservative movements continue to gain ground. However, in the data we see that, when violence and hatred feel closer, the LGTBI+ collective reinforces its commitment to those who defend equality,”declared David Armenteros, vice president of the Federation.
“This support is not free. Therefore, it is essential that the parties that receive our trust act with firmness and determination. It is not enough for them to include their commitments to LGTBI+ diversity in their speeches or electoral programs, nor for them to promise us progress. They have to act, legislating and consolidating rights,” he added.
Among its main demands, the following stand out:
-
The supervision of the Royal Decree that forces companies to guarantee LGTBI+ equality.
-
The approval of a State Pact against hate speech.
-
The effective development of the LGTBI+ Law in areas such as Education, Health, Migration and family rights.
A monolithic community?
Despite general trends, not everything is black and white. To what extent are progressive parties fulfilling their promises? Is there a risk that the collective’s support will be used as an electoral tool without tangible results? Furthermore, within the group itself there are ideological differences, experiences and priorities that are not always reflected in the global figures. Internal diversity also deserves space in the political debate.
