A historical app in full change

Grindr has been one of the best-known applications within the LGTBIQ+ community for more than fifteen years. What was born as a tool for quick meetings has evolved over time, adding more complex functions, services and profiles. Now the platform wants to take a technological leap: integrate artificial intelligence into the user experience in a deep and differentiated way.

The proposal is no less: a new premium version called EDGE, whose price could be around $350–500 per month during its testing phase.

A figure that invites both interest and reflection.

gAI™: AI integrated into every corner of the app

Unlike other features that simply add a one-off AI tool, Grindr describes EDGE as an “AI-first” experience, meaning that gAI™—its own AI system—is a part of much of the connection flow within the app.

Among the main functionalities that stand out are:

  • A-List: a summary of meaningful chats and connections you may be interested in revisiting.
  • Personalized Discover: daily recommendations that seek to reduce “infinite scrolling” and show more relevant profiles.
  • Profile Insights: additional signals to better understand who you might connect with and make more informed decisions before writing.

The idea is not just to add new tools, but to try to make the entire experience—from discovering profiles to talking to someone again—feel more efficient and meaningful.

How much does it cost and why so much discussion?

During the testing phase, Grindr has allowed users in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States to experiment with EDGE. Prices vary, and in some cases go up to almost $500 per month, although Grindr has not set a definitive official rate.

By comparison, other dating apps typically charge less than $100 per month for premium subscriptions, even at their highest tiers.

That jump in price has generated considerable debate:

  • For some people, it is a worthwhile investment if it improves the quality of connections.
  • For others, it is difficult to imagine paying so much for an app that, in essence, is still a space to meet people.

Is this a new form of digital exclusion within the same community that seeks union? Or is it simply another option for those who can and want to pay for it?

More than algorithms: what is at stake for the community?

Beyond technological innovation, EDGE raises questions about how we relate:

  • How much trust do we place in technology to “improve” human attraction?
  • Can an algorithm really understand the complexity of desire, chemistry or emotional connection?
  • Are we willing to pay for tools that promise that others will respond to us first, or that they will show us “better matches”?

These are not minor issues. Dating apps have already changed how we approach each other; Now, with AI integrated, that transformation can be accelerated. Some applaud the possibility of a system prioritizing conversations that could lead to something more. Others fear that technology will end up dictating—rather than facilitating—who deserves care.

Where is Grindr going?

Grindr has made it clear that EDGE is optional, that current plans do not change and that this testing phase seeks to gather data and refine the experience before deciding whether to extend it to more territories or users.

The company also ensures that it maintains a respectful approach to privacy, allowing AI functions to be disabled at any time and excluding sensitive data, including health data, from automatic processing.

What is clear is that the introduction of AI at the core of Grindr is not a simple add-on: it is a paradigm shift in how a historically analog (in the social sense) community meets others digitally.

And you… do you think that artificial intelligence can help find a real connection? Or is it an artificial advance for whoever has the most powerful card?
