An institutional declaration that wants to go beyond words

The Council of Ministers has approved an institutional declaration on the occasion of June 28, National LGTBI+ Pride Day. In it, the Government of Spain reiterates its intention to continue combating discrimination, violence and hate speech towards the LGTBIQ+ community. A gesture that, symbolically, aims to be a reflection of the real commitment to equality and freedom, including support for LGTBI rights.

It’s not just a date marked on the calendar. Pride continues to be a political tool, a space of memory, and also a celebration of the diverse lives that make up our society. In this context, the Executive wanted to make clear its “unwavering” support for the rights of LGTBI+ people, recognizing the richness of orientations, identities, expressions and corporalities that challenge traditional molds and promoting the defense of LGTBI rights.

20 years of equal marriage and the memory of Pedro Zerolo

The statement also makes memory. Two decades have passed since the approval of equal marriage in Spain, a pioneering law that had an international echo and that helped pave the way for other legislation. In addition, Pedro Zerolo is remembered, a key figure in the recent history of LGTBI+ activism, whose death marks ten years. His legacy is still very present in discourses of social justice and visibility.

Tools and policies in place

Among the concrete actions that the Government puts on the table, the following stand out:

  • The 028 LGTBI+ service, available 24/7, which offers attention and information on collective rights and support against hate crimes.
  • Plans for real equality in the work environment, with the aim of promoting safe spaces free of discrimination in companies.
  • Regulatory development to consolidate progress already achieved and prevent setbacks in rights.

The fight continues

From the streets to the parliaments, Pride is still necessary. Despite progress, many LGTBI+ people continue to face situations of violence, exclusion or invisibility. The defense of rights cannot be taken for granted. Not now, not ever.

This June 28 is not just a date of celebration. It is also a reminder of all that remains to be done, and an invitation to reflect: are we building a truly inclusive society or simply managing the margin of what is tolerable?
