Valparaíso, a city of stories and contrasts, has witnessed a milestone that celebrates family diversity and the unbreakable power of love. For the first time in the region, a same-sex couple has managed to adopt a child, setting a precedent full of hope and joy. This news not only transforms the life of one family, but also lights the way for many others within the LGTBIQ+ community.
Javier and Alejandro: A Story of Love and Commitment
We meet Javier Reyes, auditor accountant, and Alejandro Vascone, bank administrator, a couple residing in Valparaíso who, after two years of a rigorous process and full of expectations, has seen their dream of parenthood come true. They have become the first equal marriage to legally adopt a child in the region, an achievement that comes after the approval of equal marriage in Chile.
“It changed our lives,” Javier and Alejandro expressed with emotion when welcoming their son, who came to their home at only 11 months old. This little one, who is now one year and three months old, is the center of a new universe for them.
The Path to Fatherhood: A Process of Dedication
The journey was not short or easy. For two years, the couple underwent an exhaustive process that included talks, interviews, psychological evaluations and home visits, all managed by the Better Childhood Service. Each stage was fundamental to demonstrate their suitability and commitment, culminating in the declaration that allowed them to form this new family.
“They summoned us to a meeting and told us: ‘there is a child who is suitable for you, and you are suitable for him’. We did not think twice. In one week our house was transformed, we went from having nothing to preparing everything to receive him”, they shared, reflecting the speed and intensity with which their lives changed.
Inspiration and Hope for Family Diversity
The story of Javier and Alejandro goes beyond their own home. “Our adoption story not only changed our lives, it is also inspiring others to take the first step,” they said. His experience is a living testimony that love, responsibility and commitment to childhood are the true pillars of any family, regardless of its composition.
The Homosexual Integration and Liberation Movement (Movilh) has celebrated this event, highlighting its deep meaning. “This is a step that fills family diversity with hope and pride, demonstrating that love, responsibility and commitment to children do not know prejudices or arbitrary limitations,”, they noted.
It is especially relevant that this advance occurs in Valparaíso, a region that, unfortunately, has registered the highest number of complaints of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in the last six years. This achievement sends a powerful and positive signal to all LGTBIQ+ people in Valparaíso, and in particular to families, reaffirming that change is possible and that inclusion continues to advance.
This adoption invites us to reflect: What other prejudices and barriers can we break down in our society to ensure that all children find a home full of love? How can we continue to build a world where family diversity is celebrated and protected without reservation?
The road to a fully inclusive society may be long, but each step, like the one taken by Javier and Alejandro, brings us closer to a future where love and equality prevail.
