From September 17 to 21, Sitges will once again become an essential meeting point for queer culture. The Sitges Queer Fest, organized by the LGTBIQ+ Colors Sitges Link association together with the cultural entity El Retiro, celebrates its fifth edition with a program that mixes tradition, creativity and visibility.
A festival that celebrates art in all its forms
Music, performance, literature, poetry, dance, talks and exhibitions. The festival brings together queer voices from Catalonia and other places who come to share their work and, above all, to generate a space for dialogue and community.
The interesting thing about Sitges Queer Fest is that it is not limited to being a series of shows: it seeks to connect with the cultural memory of the municipality, where queerness has always had a place, although not always recognized.
Fiesta Major and queer culture, an unexpected intersection
The event coincides with the Fiesta Mayor de Santa Tecla, which opens an opportunity to unite the popular and the diverse. How do tradition and queer artistic expressions coexist in the same calendar? Perhaps the answer lies in the chosen settings: El Retiro, the Ave María Chapel and the Santiago Rusiñol Library, spaces with history that are given meaning with each performance.
Collaborations that add up
This year, the festival has the participation of the Ave María Foundation, Aquelarre Cultural de Dones Creadores, Grupo Everlasting, Bears Bar Sitges, Queenz, Galería Bnude Art, Rosas Luz y Color and Vermut Sitges. A network of entities that demonstrates that the cultural and social fabric of the city is more alive than ever.
How to participate?
Tickets will be available at colorssitgeslink.org, where the full program will also soon be available for download.
The festival invites us to a question that remains open: what does it mean today to celebrate queer culture in a space as symbolic as Sitges? Each person will find their own answer in the concerts, workshops or conversations that await us.
