On the International Day against LGTBI-phobia, Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to diversity and launches a powerful campaign that turns the entire city into a scene of protest and celebration.

A city committed to LGTBIQ+ rights

Barcelona does not limit itself to commemorating. Take action. On a key day for human rights, the Catalan capital has brought together institutional representatives, historical activists, specialized municipal personnel and security forces to show a common front against the hate speech that is still present, inside and outside our borders.

The institutional event, led by Mayor Jaume Collboni, marks the beginning of the cycle of activities of the Barcelona Pride 2025. During the meeting, the official poster for this edition was presented, which has as its motto “The freedom to be”, a simple but profoundly powerful slogan. This year, in addition, five alternative posters featuring neighbors from the LGTBIQ+ community have been added, bringing the message even closer to citizens.

Pride that is experienced in the neighborhoods

It’s not just a downtown celebration. From libraries to civic centers, through clubs, youth spaces and local associations, all of Barcelona is mobilized. This year’s programming is committed to being intersectional, transfeminist and intergenerational, recognizing the plurality of realities that coexist under the umbrella of the collective.

The most valuable thing about this proposal is that it does not end on a date. Although activities intensify during these months, many of them take place throughout the year, woven by a network of cultural and social agents who work in close contact with the neighborhood.

Museums that reinterpret history from diversity

Barcelona museums also join Pride, and they do so in an active way: reinterpreting their spaces and collections from an LGTBIQ+ perspective. This practice, increasingly common, seeks not only to repair historical absences, but also to generate new ways of understanding what we are and where we come from.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) will be one of the epicenters of this alternative look. From June 18 to 21, it will host The Queer/Cuir International, a meeting that will bring together artists, thinkers and activists who question hegemonic narratives about HIV and global health. A necessary exercise in decentralization of the story that invites us to imagine other possible futures.

Sixth anniversary of the LGTBI Center of Barcelona

The celebration continues on May 31 with the birthday of the LGTBI Center of Barcelona, which celebrates six years as a reference space in the defense of the sexual and emotional rights of all. Closely linked to the Sant Antoni neighborhood, the center organizes a free day open to the public with activities for all ages: shows, workshops, music and spaces for children. A party that is also a declaration of principles.

Institutional declaration against LGTBI-phobia in Europe

Beyond the local level, Barcelona City Council wanted to express its rejection of policies that threaten the dignity of the group in other European countries. In this sense, the municipal plenary session has approved a declaration condemning the ban on Pride events in Hungary, promoted by Viktor Orbán’s government. A political gesture that, although symbolic, sends a clear message: human rights know no borders.
