Barcelona celebrates the return of one of its most beloved symbols: the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. After a thorough rehabilitation, this spectacle of water, light and sound is preparing to once again dazzle the citizens and those who visit us. Are you ready to witness its renewed splendor?
A Resurgence with History and Future
Since September 24, coinciding with the La Mercè Day, the waters of the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc and the waterfalls on Maria Cristina Avenue will dance again. A long-awaited moment, which culminates an unprecedented improvement and modernization process in the last three decades.
Let us remember that the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, designed by Carles Buïgas for the 1929 International Exhibition, is not just a fountain; It is part of the soul of Barcelona. This rehabilitation has not only maintained its historical essence, but has propelled it towards a more sustainable and efficient future. How do you think that balance between tradition and avant-garde is achieved?
Technology and Sustainability at Hand
The works have represented a true technological revolution. The remote control system has been optimized, providing it with greater flexibility and reliability. But the most visible, without a doubt, is the replacement of 4,760 incandescent bulbs with only 680 LED bulbs. Imagine this: the same lighting, but with energy consumption that goes from 1,507 kW to an impressive 72 kW. A drastic reduction that invites us to reflect on the impact of technology on our ecological footprint!
In addition, 380 submerged LED lights have been installed with new supports and all hydraulic components have been exhaustively reviewed, from the circuits to the valves and seals. Intensive sound, water and light testing throughout July, August and early September ensures everything is working perfectly.

Calendar of Shows and Vibrant Rhythms
The grand starting signal will be the long-awaited La Mercè Pyromusical, on Sunday, September 28 at 10:00 p.m., which promises an unforgettable experience.
Starting October 2, the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc will resume its usual hours:
- October: Thursday to Saturday, from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
- November and December: Thursday to Saturday, from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
And pay attention, because October will bring us new choreographies with a wide variety of musical genres: rock, jazz, classical music, rumba, soundtracks… Diversity is guaranteed for all tastes! And with the arrival of Christmas, we can enjoy special shows with Christmas carols, creating a magical atmosphere for these dates.
The Endreça Plan and the Future of Urban Fountains
The rehabilitation of the Magic Fountain is part of the City Council’s ambitious Endreça Plan, which will allocate 6.6 million euros until 2028 to improve the operation of 78 ornamental fountains throughout the city. A clear commitment to optimizing the use of water and the recovery of these elements that beautify our public spaces.
At the same time, since last April, with the lifting of drought restrictions, the City Council has been working tirelessly on refurbishing the ornamental fountains. Currently, about 65% are already in operation, and starting in October, phase III will begin, which includes the reactivation of about seventy large sources. All this, within a maintenance contract that allocates 2.1 million euros between 2024 and 2025 to ensure the recovery and good condition of the city’s 335 ornamental fountains.
This investment is not only in infrastructure, but also in the well-being and enjoyment of all citizens. Do you think that the recovery of these water spaces has a positive impact on our quality of life? What other public spaces would you like to see renovated in your city?
The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is back with a vengeance, more efficient, more sustainable and more spectacular than ever. An example of how respect for heritage and innovation can merge to create unforgettable experiences for everyone.
