The City Council has finally revealed the official poster for its next Drag Gala, a key event which will take place on February 21 at 8:00 p.m. in the emblematic Prince of Asturias Municipal Auditorium. But beyond the date, it is this year’s image that has ignited the conversation, reaffirming the city’s historical role as the epicenter of LGTBIQ+ expression without complexes.
What meaning does an advertising poster have beyond its practical function? In the case of Torremolinos, it is a declaration of intentions.
An Aesthetics That Does Not Ask Permission
The design and communication studio Alcalde León, responsible for the creation, has opted for an aesthetic that is anything but complacent. It is a portrait that looks straight ahead, defiantly, encapsulating the strength and attitude of drag art.
- Visual Impact: The design is intentionally raw and powerful, with a language that its creators define as “punk.” There is no softness, but rather intense textures, broken fonts, strong contrasts and dramatic shadows.
- The Drag Face: The central figure, with his exaggerated makeup, is presented as a consciously constructed character, self-confident and proud. It reinforces the idea of drag as an art form, an aesthetic and, fundamentally, a tool for vindication.
As Javier León, co-founder of Alcalde León, explains, the objective was to create a poster “very direct that appeals to the drag world”, prioritizing gesture and attitude over formal perfection. It is a scream of energy, impact and visual tension designed to capture our attention.
Beyond Brilliance: Diversity and Claim
The Torremolinos Drag Gala defines itself as a space of freedom, excess, identity and a show without filters. The institutional and community voices underline the component of celebration and, at the same time, struggle that surrounds the event.
Francisco García, Councilor for Equality, has highlighted that with this gala “joy, diversity and demand return” to the municipality, actively encouraging local drags to participate and recognizing their daily work in the visibility of the LGTBIQ+ community in Torremolinos.
For her part, Alma DeSoul, winner of the previous edition and member of this year’s jury, joined the call, celebrating the “pleasure of being here vindicating LGTBI pride, diversity, color and the magic that carnival has”.
