From May 15 to 27, the University of Cádiz once again stands up to discrimination with a brave and plural proposal. Workshops, presentations, art and advocacy come together in days that, more than events, are a declaration of principles. Under the unofficial but always latent motto of “diversity is not negotiated”, the General Directorate of Diversity joins forces with social and cultural entities so that the month of May sounds like freedom and pride.

Cádiz focuses on inclusion… also in sport

Everything starts with a very symbolic training: the Rainbow Point aimed at the Cádiz CF staff. The goal? Convert the stadium into a space where LGTBIphobia has no place either in the stands or in the locker room. The talk, led by the criminologist Antonio Sanz and the director of Diversity of the UCA, Antonio Zayas, marks the beginning of a conference that is committed to real transversality.

Reflections, art and activism: thinking is also resisting

From the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters to the Contemporary Culture Space, the program is a feast for lovers of critical thinking and art with a cause. Talks about transfeminism, historical memory, chemsex, intersexuality or LGTBIQ+ representation in video games make up a calendar that embraces both emotions and reason.

For example, Alicia Ramos reflects on whether social change is irreversible; Daniel Valero “Tigrillo” dismantles hate speech with arguments; and José María Gil and Pablo Criado take us on a journey through the history of homoerotic desire. A mix between archive and present that, if we think about it, is also future.

Not everything is celebrating: it’s time to question

Although the atmosphere is celebratory, you also have to raise your eyebrows. To what extent do these conferences translate into structural changes inside and outside the University? Does this message reach the entire educational community or does it remain with those who are already convinced? Good intentions matter, yes, but concrete gestures even more. Inclusion cannot remain symbolic: it has to land in real policies, budgets and constant actions.

Diversity with a capital D (and with many voices)

In addition to academic activities, there is space for community activities. From meetings of LGTBIQ+ associations to round tables on bisexuality or queer old age, the focus is clear: all the lyrics of the collective have something to say. And they all deserve to be heard.

The icing on the cake will be the closing event on May 27, with an exhibition of LGTBIQ+ sports references provided by the Cádiz CF Foundation. One way to remember that making visible is also resisting.
