The Illustrious Bar Association of Madrid (ICAM) took a relevant step in 2021—although perhaps still insufficient—in its commitment to diversity: the creation of an LGTBI+ Committee, which depends on its Delegate Commission for Diversity and Inclusion. This initiative seeks not only to make visible and raise awareness regarding sexual orientation and gender identity within the legal field, but also to develop concrete strategies to advance a more egalitarian legal profession free of discrimination.

Who is part of the LGTBI+ Committee of ICAM?
This new space is promoted by the ICAM Governing Board itself, with the participation of deputies Lola Fernández, José Ramón Couso and Ana Buitrago. But suns don’t walk. Workers from the College have also joined, as well as groups from the legal sector with experience in LGTBIQ+ rights. The intention seems clear: to build a plural committee, with diverse voices and solid knowledge to face the challenges that still exist within the profession.
Clear objectives… and achievable?
The Committee has a series of ambitious goals on the table, ranging from making a diagnosis of the real situation of the LGTBIQ+ community in the legal profession to proposing solutions to the structural discriminations that are often still present. Among its main purposes are:
- Analyze the specific challenges faced by LGTBIQ+ legal professionals.
- Propose real changes and monitor their implementation.
- Raise awareness among the institution and its members about LGTBIQ+ realities.
- Promote active monitoring of regulations and jurisprudence on diversity.
- Promote safe, respectful and bias-free work environments.
- Offer advice pro bono both to society and to professionals in the sector.
- Promote continuous training in diversity within the legal field.
- Support LGTBIQ+ events, talks and activities from the School.
It is, in summary, a roadmap with an inclusive perspective, which seeks to transform a historical institution from within. But as is often the case with these topics, intentions must be measured by their results.
A real change or a symbolic gesture?
Although the creation of the LGTBI+ Committee represents undoubted progress, we cannot help but ask ourselves: to what extent is this initiative having real weight in ICAM policies? Is there a deep commitment to transformation or are we facing an institutional gesture to comply with what is politically correct? History reminds us that diversity often becomes an empty label if it is not translated into concrete, evaluable and sustainable actions. And this is where the LGTBIQ+ community—inside and outside the legal world—will play a key role in demanding that promises not remain on paper.
The challenge of making diversity a common practice
Inclusion should not be the exception, but the norm. This ICAM Committee opens an important door, but there is still a long way to go. How do you ensure that all voices are heard? How can we prevent this initiative from being relegated to symbolism without real impact? Diversity is not a box to check, it is a culture to build. And that means getting uncomfortable, questioning yourself and, above all, acting. We will see if the College is truly willing to do so.
