In a significant milestone for the LGTBIQ+ community, the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona has performed more than a hundred glottoplasties in the last five years, a surgery that allows trans women to align their voice with their gender identity. This center is positioned as the only public hospital in Catalonia that offers this intervention, making a crucial difference in access to specialized health care.

A Path Towards Vocal Authenticity

The voice is much more than a sound; It is an intrinsic part of our identity, a fundamental tool to express ourselves and connect with the world. For many trans women, the dissonance between their voice assigned at birth and their female identity can be a source of discomfort and discrimination. Glottoplasty emerges as a solution that not only modifies the larynx, but also empowers these people in their affirmation process.

Sílvia Pérez-Pallarès, one of the patients who underwent this surgery in 2023 after a five-year wait, emphasizes the importance of this procedure. “The voice is very important because it is part of my identity”, shares Sílvia, reflecting the feelings of many others who seek this intervention. Although the ten-day postoperative period without speaking can be “an ordeal,” the reward, according to her, is “very great.”

Glottoplasty: A Minimally Invasive Procedure with Great Impact

From the Clínic, glottoplasty is described as a minimally invasive surgery that requires only a few hours of admission. The technique consists of reducing the size of the larynx and tightening the vocal cords, which raises the fundamental frequency of the voice and gives it characteristics associated with the female gender. This medical advance not only improves the quality of life of patients, but also contributes to their psychological and social well-being.

However, the success of this program also reveals a growing need. The hospital has been operating on women who were on the waiting list since 2019, underscoring the urgency of increasing resources to accommodate demand. Are we as a society prepared to guarantee that all members of the LGTBIQ+ community have equitable access to these essential treatments?

The history of the Clínic and the more than one hundred trans women who have feminized their voices is a testimony of progress and resilience. It invites us to reflect on the importance of inclusive medicine and the fundamental role that health systems play in recognizing and supporting diverse identities. What more can we do to ensure that each person can live their truth fully, without barriers or endless waits?
