The world of sports has always been a reflection of our society, with its lights and shadows. We have often witnessed how certain spaces can feel exclusive to the LGTBIQ+ community. However, there are initiatives that break barriers and show that sport can be a powerful driver of inclusion and visibility. Precisely, this is what has happened in Tarragona with the launch of the ‘Rugby Touch LGTBI+’ project. A proposal that goes beyond a simple team and stands as a symbol of commitment and diversity in the sports field.
More than a team: Creating safe and visible spaces
Promoted by the Tarragona City Council, through the Department of Equality, Feminist Policies and LGTBI+, and with the support of Tarragona Deportes and the Tarragona Rugby Club, this new team is integrated into the structure of the Tarragona Rugby Club. But its objective transcends the merely sporting. The main goal is clear: to generate safe and visible environments where all citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can enjoy sports. The enthusiasm is palpable. Starting next September 19, the municipal rugby field of the Mediterranean Ring will host the first training sessions, and there are already twenty people registered, ready to embark on this new adventure. Fight against LGTBIphobia and promote inclusive sport
This initiative does not come from nowhere. It is part of a series of active policies that the Tarragona council is carrying out to promote sport among groups that have historically been more vulnerable and, crucially, to combat LGTBIphobia in the sporting field.
It is a firm step towards a more just and equitable society.
The presentation of the project took place on the same rugby field, an ideal setting to underline the message of inclusion. Cecilia Mangini, Minister of Equality, Feminist Policies and LGTBI+, proudly expressed the meaning of this proposal: “It is a pride for us to present this project, a new team open to all citizens and with the desire to create safe, visible sports spaces”. For his part, Mario Soler, Minister of Sports, highlighted that this action is “one more example that Tarragona, in all areas, is an inclusive and cohesive city with everything and everyone”. Óscar Quintela, president of the Tarragona Rugby Club, also wanted to show his gratitude for the collaboration between the City Council and the club.
Trainings, workshops and the value of the “third time”
Starting September 19, the new team will meet weekly for training tailored to different levels, ensuring everyone can participate and progress at their own pace. But not everything will be oval ball and races. The training will be complemented with workshops and training focused on diversity and the prevention of LGTBIphobia. In addition, sporting events and meetings with other groups and entities will be organized, thus promoting a broader network of support and visibility.
And, as a good rugby tradition, the “third period” could not be missed. This space for social cohesion, held after training, is essential for rugby. It goes beyond the game; It is a time for socialization, mutual support and strengthening ties between team members. This project is in perfect harmony with the Feminism and Intersectionality Plan of the city of Tarragona (2022-2026), pursuing one of its essential objectives: facilitating access to sports practice for especially vulnerable groups and promoting the visibility and participation of women in sports.
