The homophobic harassment of Javier Rodríguez, LGTBI commissioner of Barcelona City Council, has provoked a unanimous institutional response this weekend. Mayor Jaume Collboni and the Observatori against LGTBIphobia have strongly condemned a campaign of insults and “gaiphobic tweets” coming, according to the entity, from sectors linked to the extreme right, who have attacked the commissioner for his sexual orientation and his political work.
An orchestrated hate campaign on networks
The Observatori has been the first to sound the alarm, pointing out that these hate speeches are not part of political disagreement, but are direct attacks on dignity. The entity stressed that the attacks come mainly from sympathizers of the Catalan extreme right, seeking to dehumanize the political rival through homophobia.
Jaume Collboni strongly joined the complaint, remembering that Barcelona must always be a space of freedom and rights. The Barcelona mayor insisted that hate is not an opinion and reaffirmed his commitment to prevent digital platforms from becoming havens of intolerance, especially when attacks affect representatives of the LGTBI+ community.

Legal complaint against degrading insults
Javier Rodríguez himself has explained that the origin of this coordinated offensive, allegedly led by profiles related to the extreme right, was his intervention in a press conference on the improvement of indicators in youth. From that moment on, the attacks became personal, including lies about his private life and comments of a sexist and homophobic nature.
The messages posted on the networks include seriously degrading accusations, suggesting that Rodríguez holds his position for “sexual merits.” Given the seriousness of the events, the commissioner has confirmed that he has already filed the corresponding complaint, ensuring that he will go to the end to put limits on the dehumanization strategy.
Barcelona as a bastion against LGTBIphobia
This episode of homophobic harassment of Javier Rodríguez highlights the vulnerability of queer public officials in the face of ‘troll’ farms. However, the council’s response seeks to send a message of tranquility to citizens. The integration of youth well-being indicators and the defense of civil rights will continue to be the central axis of the commissioner’s management despite the coercion.
The City Council has recalled that attacks based on homophobia have legal consequences in Catalonia under the protection of collective protection laws. The city of Barcelona, a traditional international reference in equality policies, thus reinforces its institutional protection against hate speech that attempts to erode democratic coexistence.
