This is precisely what has happened in San Sebastián de los Reyes, where the condemnation of the homophobic insults against goalkeeper Alberto Lejárraga has been unanimous and forceful.

During a Second Football Federation match between Rayo Majadahonda and UD Sanse, the referee was forced to stop the match. The reason? The unacceptable homophobic insults directed from the stands towards Alberto Lejárraga, the UD Sanse goalkeeper. This unfortunate episode, which interrupted the dynamics of the game, generated a wave of reactions that were immediate. Sports clubs, political representatives of various ideologies and the fans themselves have come together to show their deepest rejection of what happened, making it clear that this type of behavior has no place in sport or society.

Alberto Lejárraga is not just any footballer. He is the first openly homosexual player in Spanish football, and his career has been marked by valuable work to make the LGTBIQ+ collective visible. The Protocol in Action and the Institutional Response
In response to the homophobic shouts, the referee acted in accordance with the established protocol, stopping the match and warning over the public address system that the match would not continue if the insults persisted. From the political sphere, the mayor of San Sebastián de los Reyes, Lucía Fernández (PP), described what happened as “intolerable”, ensuring that “neither in sport nor in life in general is there room for hate speech.” His support, and that of his Government Team, for Lejárraga has been explicit. Likewise, the local opposition, with the PSOE spokesperson, Narciso Romero, at the head, along with other groups such as Izquierda Independiente or Más Madrid Sanse, have also shown their solidarity with the goalkeeper.
