Same-sex marriage in Mexico continues to grow. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) released on September 29, 2026, the country registered 6,481 weddings between same-sex individuals in 2025, compared to 4,341 in 2021. This is an increase of 49.3% over five years.
How many equal marriages were there in Mexico in 2025?
In 2025, 6,481 marriages between same-sex individuals were celebrated in Mexico, out of a total of 491,640 marriages registered in the country. The number of equal weddings is 49.3% higher than in 2021, when there were 4,341.
The data also shows a clear prominence of women: 61.4% of these unions (3,978) were between women and 38.6% (2,503) between men. That is, six out of ten equal weddings are of female couples.
Where same-sex couples get married
Same-sex marriage is already present in almost the entire country. In 2021, there were weddings between same-sex individuals in 26 federal entities; in 2025 there were already 31. Hidalgo was the only entity without records last year.
By weight on the total number of marriages, the list is led by Mexico City (4.36%), Baja California (3.28%), and Nayarit (2.8%), according to the newspaper Meridiano. Nayarit, in 28th place in the country in total number of weddings, registered 130 equal marriages: 79 between women and 51 between men.
Divorces: they are also increasing
Divorces among same-sex couples reached 915 in 2025, the highest figure in the series. In 2021 there were 441. Of those 915, 597 were from female couples and 318 from male couples. In total, Mexico registered 155,254 divorces in 2025.
The increase in divorces is also part of normalization: same-sex couples now have access to the same legal figure, both for marriage and for separation.
A progress that still has gaps
For UNAM academic Denisse Paulette Campuzano Ramos, the data reflects that “we are witnessing a progress of great significance in the Mexican legal system.”
Still, legal equality is not complete throughout the country. On the same September 29, the Diversity Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved a call for the congresses of Aguascalientes and Chihuahua to reform their laws and recognize same-sex marriage. In those states, many couples have to resort to the courts to be able to marry.
Same-sex couples also marry somewhat later than the average: 34.9 years for women and 37.3 for men, compared to the national averages of 32.5 and 35.4 years.
