In the heart of Madrid, the LGTBI+ Collective of Madrid (COGAM) once again raises its voice for sexual health with a new edition of its already consolidated HIV and Hepatitis C Rapid Test Week. From October 20 to 24, its headquarters at Calle de la Puebla, 9, becomes a space of care, confidentiality and free access to essential tests. An initiative that, under the motto “get to know you, take care of you, take care of ourselves,” invites us to reflect on the importance of early diagnosis.
COGAM, an entity with deep roots in the LGTBIQ+ community, has demonstrated over the years its unwavering commitment to the prevention and detection of HIV. With an annual average of more than 600 rapid HIV tests, and 3% of reactive results, the organization stands as a fundamental pillar in Madrid’s public health. This annual campaign not only seeks to disseminate the existence of the test, but also to normalize it and make it accessible to everyone.

Figures that Speak: A Reflection of Diversity and Need
The 2024 data is revealing and underlines the relevance of COGAM’s work. 601 HIV and 426 Hepatitis C tests were carried out in 606 appointments, a testament to the reach of their service. When analyzing gender identity, a wide representation is observed, with 5.45% of the tests carried out on trans people, a figure that highlights the importance of reaching historically vulnerable groups.
Regarding sexual orientation, 79.26% of users identified themselves as part of the GBHSH group (gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men), of which 39.89% were migrants. These numbers not only reflect the diversity of those who come to COGAM, but also the need to maintain and strengthen these community resources. Are we making sure these services reach every corner of our community, especially those who need it most?
Meryl Stripper: Humor and Awareness in Prevention
This year, the COGAM campaign has opted for a figure that combines humor and closeness to break stigmas: the drag queen Meryl Stripper. Protagonist of a spot that invites people to take a rapid HIV test in oral fluid, Meryl reminds us that knowing our serological status is a simple, painless and effective act. In about 20 minutes, we can obtain information crucial to our health.
Ronny de la Cruz, president of COGAM, emphasizes the double dimension of this initiative: “Testing Week is an opportunity to remember that knowing your status is a way to take care of yourself and, in addition, you contribute to the status of your community. The more people who access early diagnosis, the closer we will be to stopping new transmissions.” Mario Blázquez, head of the Sexual Health Promotion Service, adds: “We offer a quick, confidential and free test, and we accompany each person with confidence and without judgements.”
These words invite us to think: What role do trust and non-judgment play in a person’s decision to get tested? How can we, as a society, create safer, more welcoming environments so that no one hesitates to seek the care they need?
Accessibility and Confidentiality: Pillars of the Service
The rapid HIV test offered by COGAM is characterized by its accessibility: it does not require an appointment and is completely confidential. Since it is performed with a saliva sample, it avoids drawing blood, making it a quick and comfortable process. The results, available in a few minutes, allow users to know their serological status immediately.
COGAM extends an invitation to everyone, especially those who have never had a test, to come to its headquarters this week. Participating in this action is a key step in the prevention and control of HIV, an act of individual responsibility that has an impact on collective well-being.
