Sometimes, institutional bureaucracy can seem like a distant labyrinth, alien to our daily lives. However, today we bring one of those news that transcends the official role to directly impact the reality of our community. The Castilian-La Mancha Executive has finally given the green light to the creation of the Diversity Commission and the LGTBIQ+ Regional Council.

But what exactly does this mean for you, dear reader? It means that the region is activating the necessary machinery so that Law 5/2022 on Sexual Diversity is not just a declaration of intentions, but a living and effective tool.

An institutional shield for our rights

In a sociopolitical context where other regions of Spain face the shadow of regression, consolidating spaces for the defense of sexual and gender diversity is an act of pure resistance. Sara Simón, the current Minister of Equality, has highlighted the vital nature of this movement after the recent meeting of the Government Council. According to the president, it is not only about protecting what has already been achieved, but about inviting the LGTBIQ+ community to the table where decisions are made.

To understand the scope of this announcement, it is necessary to break down how these two new drivers of change will work:

  • The Diversity Commission: Imagine a great internal mechanism of the regional government. This collegiate body will be made up of 18 different general directorates, covering all areas that can influence our lives. They will be joined by the Women’s Institute and the regional Health Service (SESCAM). Its mission is clear: to ensure that each public policy, from health to education, is designed with a perspective of real diversity. Additionally, they will be tasked with auditing their own work through a triannual impact report.
  • The LGTBIQ+ Regional Council: This is where the voice of the street comes in. This will be the consultative space par excellence, where citizens and activism will have a fixed seat. Along with government and union representatives, ten exclusive seats will be reserved for LGTBIQ+ entities and associations in Castilla-La Mancha. It is the direct channel for claims to become official recommendations.

The roadmap to spring

The Ministry of Equality plans for both organizations to be fully established this coming spring. The first major duty that will be entrusted to the new Commission will be to design an ambitious strategic plan. The objective is to achieve real transversality; That is, the defense of LGTBIQ+ rights permeates every corner of the administration.

This progress is added to other measures that have been consolidated in the current legislature, such as the expansion of the Comprehensive Care Service (SAI) to all the provinces of the community or the explicit support for protest dates such as Lesbian Visibility Day.

A space for reflection

At this point, I invite you, reader, to pause for a moment and analyze the scenario. Do you think that the creation of government advisory bodies is enough to stop the LGTBIphobia that still persists in our streets and schools? To what extent does an institutional Council ensure that the most vulnerable and intersectional voices in our community are truly heard by those in power? Laws and advice pave the way, but it is citizen vigilance that ensures that we do not deviate from it.
