The Internet has become the new battlefield for human rights. Given the alarming increase in hate speech on the Internet and the lack of official statistics in Spain, Rainbow E Safe was born, the first association in the country specialized exclusively in the intersection between digital security and reality LGTBIQ+. Its objective is clear: to professionalize the response to violence that, even if it occurs behind a screen, has devastating consequences in real life.

A void covered by professionals

Until now, victims of LGTBIphobic cyberbullying were in limbo: LGTBI organizations did not always master the technical part, and cybersecurity entities lacked a gender or diversity perspective. Pablo Campos, computer expert and president of Rainbow E Safe, points out the urgency of the project: “We were born to be that technical and human reference that did not exist in Spain, with a comprehensive approach to rights.”

The four pillars of Rainbow E Safe

The association’s activity is not limited to advice, but deploys a 360-degree strategy:

  • Support for victims: Specialized psychological care both in person and online.
  • Technical training: Courses for lawyers, psychologists and security forces on digital rights and prevention.
  • Research: Publication of an annual report to put figures to a reality that is invisible today.
  • Incidence and Self-Defense: Workshops on privacy, encryption and, above all, documentation of evidence.

The importance of digital proof

One of the biggest obstacles for a hate crime to prosper in court is the loss of evidence. For this reason, Rainbow E Safe focuses on the preservation of evidence: from captures with metadata to digital chains of custody. Without a rigorous method to document harassment or blackmail, most cases end up shelved due to lack of evidence.

With its headquarters in Barcelona and a statewide scope, this non-profit entity is positioned as an indispensable tool so that people’s identity stops being a risk factor in the digital ecosystem.
