The Plot: An Encounter in Provincetown

The plot takes place in bright but often lonely Provincetown, a perfect setting for introspection and self-discovery. Lourenço, after a painful breakup, is looking for a new beginning. It is in this context of vulnerability and hope that she meets Maurice, and what begins as a chance encounter transforms into a deep connection that forces them to confront their deepest fears and the universal need to find a sense of belonging.

High Tide addresses such relevant topics as:

  • Identity: The exploration of who we are and how we define ourselves in a constantly changing world.
  • Uprooting: The experience of those looking for a home, both physical and emotional.
  • Second chances: The belief in the ability to reinvent oneself and find happiness after adversity.

The film offers a diverse and realistic representation of contemporary queer relationships and the migrant experience, elements that make it deeply human and relevant in the current landscape.

The Director’s Vision: A Personal Reflection

Marco Calvani shares that the genesis of High Tide occurred in the summer of 2020, during the pandemic, a period of uncertainty that, paradoxically, gave him the opportunity to leave his comfort zone and delve deeper into himself. As a gay man and narrator, Calvani recognizes the internal struggle of Lourenço, a character who, like him, longs for sexual and emotional independence and freedom in mind, body and soul.

What does it mean to you to be free in mind, body and soul? How do you think cinema can help make these internal struggles visible? Why Can’t You Miss High Tide?
