Dating apps promised to bring people from the community closer together, but for many, they have ended up being a showcase focused almost solely on the sexual, where those looking for something more — a real conversation, a calm date, a friendship — do not always find space. HBB Bar, in the l’Eixample neighborhood of Barcelona, has created a simple alternative: seating a group of single people from the community around a table, without screens in between, and letting the conversation do the rest. Thus, Dinner for Singles was born, the weekly meeting that gathers at HBB Bar every Tuesday those who are tired of swiping and simply want to look each other in the face.
What is Dinner for Singles
Dinner for Singles is a fixed event at HBB Bar, at Consell de Cent 247 (Barcelona), held every Tuesday at 8:30 PM. A group of between 15 and 40 single people from the community shares a table with a single purpose: to get to know each other for real, without the pressure or filter of a screen.
Why this dinner was created
Many of the apps that emerged to connect people from the community have ended up focusing almost exclusively on sexual encounters. Those looking for something different, whether it be a friendship, a quiet date, or simply a good conversation, often find themselves without a space to find it. The Dinner for Singles at HBB Bar recovers the essentials: looking each other in the face, talking without haste, and letting chemistry arise — if it has to arise — in a close and safe environment.
Who it is aimed at
This plan is designed for single people from the community who want to meet new people calmly and with real intention, beyond a quick encounter. It is the ideal date for those who are tired of apps and value a good conversation, a shared dinner, and the possibility — without pressure — of a friendship, a date, or something more.
The pins and the MATCH: how HBB Bar protects your privacy
What makes this dinner different is its way of protecting those who participate. Each attendee receives, upon arrival, a pin with a number visible throughout the night. That number is the only “identity” that circulates at the table: no one asks names or requests phone numbers during dinner, only remembers the numbers of the people they are interested in.
At the end of the evening, each person hands Pablo Campos, the event host, a paper with the numbers of the five people they liked the most: their “Top 5”. There is MATCH when two people have mutually chosen each other. Only then does Pablo cross the lists and ask, separately, both people if they want to share their phone number — and only does so if both respond yes.
What if there is no match? No one is exposed: each person’s choice is confidential and it is never revealed who each person has chosen.
Privacy and data protection
No personal data is shared without explicit permission. Each participant signs a data protection document that authorizes that, only in case of MATCH, their contact details are provided to that other person. During dinner, only the pin number is used; phones are only exchanged if there is a match and both parties agree. The Top 5 lists are confidential, only Pablo Campos sees them, and the papers are destroyed once the crossing is done.
What a night of Dinner for Singles is like, step by step
- Welcome (8:30 PM): Pablo Campos greets each registered attendee at the door, one by one.
- The pin: each person receives their number, visible throughout the evening.
- The table: Pablo accompanies each attendee to their seat, ensuring that the tables are balanced.
- Dinner and ice-breaking dynamics: while dining, there are small dynamics designed to facilitate conversation — introducing oneself with the pin number and a fun fact, rotating seats between courses, cards with questions about travel, plans, or quirks, and a final free round before filling out the Top 5.
- The Top 5: each attendee hands their paper to Pablo Campos.
- The MATCH: Pablo crosses the lists and, if there is a match, asks for permission from both people before sharing their phone numbers.
After dinner, the night continues: anyone who wants can stay until closing with their new friends, at happy hour prices.
