Whether you’re just starting out in this world or have spent years transforming yourself in front of the mirror, achieving impeccable drag makeup is not just a matter of technique, but of attitude, self-knowledge and, of course, practice (and tons of hairspray).
I want to share with you a practical guide, with essential tricks, useful reflections and an important reminder: there is no single correct way to do drag. There are as many forms as there are identities, faces and dreams. Let’s go there!

1. Preparing the skin: the basis of every empire
Before even opening the color palette, it’s time to prepare the canvas. The skin needs to be clean, hydrated and pampered.
Why is it so important? Because drag makeup is intense. We are talking about layers of products that, without good preparation, can crack, mark imperfections or simply not last.
Essential tips:
- Cleanse your face with a mild product.
- Apply a rich but light moisturizer (yes, that exists).
- Use a primer that suits your skin type: mattifying, illuminating or hydrating.
And what about the beard? If there is shaving shadow, an orange or salmon concealer before foundation can work wonders.
2. Gluing eyebrows: a great little odyssey
Eyebrows are a key point in drag makeup. Many times they are covered completely to redraw them higher and create a more expressive and theatrical face.
How is it done? There are different methods, but the most common (and economical) is with a glue stick. Yes, that one with the cabbages. But be careful: make sure it is non-toxic and washable.
Basic steps:
- Comb your eyebrows up.
- Apply several thin coats of glue, combing between coats.
- Once dry, seal with translucent powder.
- Cover with concealer and then foundation.
Do you always have to cover your eyebrows? No. There are drag performers who choose to work with their natural eyebrows. Others discolor them. Here, each person decides their path according to their aesthetics and comfort.

3. Contour and lighting: sculpting a fantasy
Contouring in drag is not discreet. It is dramatic, exaggerated and plays with light and shadow to create another face. One that may have nothing to do with the original… and that’s part of the magic.
Key Tips:
- Use a lighter foundation to highlight (T zone, under the eyes).
- Sculpt with dark tones (cheeks, jaw, nose).
- Blends well, but without losing its shape.
Here you don’t have to be afraid of appearing “exaggerated”. Drag makeup is seen from the stage, from the photo, from the soul. If it seems like a lot in person, it will be perfect on camera.
4. Eyes that speak: shadows, lashes and drama
The eyes are one of the juiciest parts of drag makeup. And one of the most challenging. The goal here is not subtlety: we want drama.
Some useful tips:
- Use an eyeshadow primer. This way the color looks more vibrant and lasts longer.
- Don’t be afraid to cut the eye socket with a “cut crease”.
- Play with intense colors: violets, neon greens, electric blues… the sky is not the limit!
- Double layer of false eyelashes. Or triple. Or whatever your soul asks for.
A question that is repeated: “what if I don’t know how to do symmetrical eyeliner?” Spoiler: almost no one knows at first. It is learned. And if it doesn’t come out, you can always put a rhinestone on top. 😜
5. Powerful lips: the final touch
Drag makeup is crowned with sculptural lips. Eyeliner is your best ally.
Classic trick: line the outside of the natural lip to make it bigger. Fill with a striking tone (blood red, fuchsia, dark purple…) and add gloss if you want a juicier finish.
And if your pulse trembles… start outlining with a pencil and then fill in. Or use a fine brush for more control. Nobody was born knowing.
6. Seal everything: don’t let the art melt
So many layers, so many colors… how to prevent everything from melting in the middle of a performance (or in the subway at 35 degrees)?
Solutions:
- Translucent powder to seal everything.
- Setting spray (there are specific long-lasting ones).
- If you sweat a lot, carry a sponge with you for quick touch-ups.
7. There are no fixed rules (although it seems like there are)
Sometimes it seems like there is only one right way to do drag makeup. But the truth is different: drag is freedom.
Are there useful techniques? Clear. Tips that help? Of course. But there are also people who skip everything and create a unique aesthetic.
And who defines what is “perfect”? Perhaps your ideal makeup is not the cleanest or symmetrical, but rather the one that best represents you.
8. A personal (and collective) journey
Drag makeup is not just painting a face. It’s telling a story, expressing an identity, playing with gender, breaking molds… or simply having a good time.
There are days when everything goes wrong. The base rusts, the outline smudges, and nothing seems to fit. But there is something beautiful in that too. Learn, insist, explore. Because every time you face the mirror, you also face yourself.
